Fall Folklore & Friendship

It all started with a precocious Italian pug….

"The first time I met Miki Von Bartha was in 2018 at breakfast in Villa Flor, a tiny, art-filled jewel box of a B&B at the end of the Engadin Valley in Switzerland. Miki had a stunning 18th Century home down the road in the village but would come to the B&B daily for his morning coffee and conversation with the art-minded clientele. We met over bowls of muesli while my dog Pepper, a puppy at the time, tore the house and kitchen down. While I showed up to the breakfast table in my bulky ski gear, Miki was the picture of elegance in his corduroy pants, blazer and silk pocket square, deciding he liked the naughty pup. It turned out that this distinguished gentleman was the owner of a prestigious contemporary art gallery in Basel. We became fast friends. Not only had Miki been an avid collector and dealer of contemporary art for over 60 years, but during that time he had also amassed an enormous, rare collection of 18th and 19th century Transylvanian textiles, ceramics and furniture. He invited me to view the collection in Basel, to do further research in Budapest, and to collaborate on a new project together, which we did in 2020 - creating a capsule of clothing and homeware pulsating with new patterns inspired by his originals.” - J.J. Martin

Two years later, Miki was asked by the prestigious K.B.H. Geiger Foundation in Basel to show his entire Transylvanian collection, one of the world’s largest, privately held, in a public exhibit. “He came back to me asking if I’d like to collaborate again.”, says J.J. “Of course, yes!” This time, we not only crafted several new ready to wear pieces but we also designed an exhibition space inside the Foundation to house all of our designs and to create a visual appetizer to Miki’s main meal in the next room.

Conceived as a forest chapel, La DoubleJ transformed an entire room of the exhibition space with custom designed and produced lattice archways, massive paper leaves lining the walls and ceilings, and giant flowers sprouting our of mannequin heads. The space became a surreal explosion of color and pattern that was informed by, but never mimicking, the historical originals that followed in the next room. Entitled “Transylvania’s Hidden Treasures”, the co-curated exhibit launched in August 2022 and was celebrated by several events in Basel hosted by Foundation Director Raphael Suter and his wife, Communication and Marketing Chief, Stephanie.

The festivities were capped off by a cocktail party and special 70 person, seven course seated dinner featuring La DoubleJ’s Transylvanian porcelain plates, table linens and Murano glasses. Each guest took home a dessert plate as a gift, while J.J. modeled the brand new ready to wear - literally hot out our oven - all of which you can shop below.

An enormous thank you to our friends Stephanie and Raphael Suter of The KBH Geiger Foundation, Tina Braunwalder and to our beloved friend Miki, for his inspiration, his friendship, and for completely changing his opinion on pugs.
