Laura Gonzalez

Paris’ Most Print-Forward Powerhouse Interior Designer

When we landed in Paris last month for the whirlwind launch of our LDJ x The Socialite Family collection, we made sure that our first stop in the City of Lights was to acclaimed interior designer and J.J.'s dear friend Laura Gonzalez' exquisite galerie. Named the Furniture Fair’s Designer of the Year in 2019, Laura has racked up a wildly impressive list of high-profile projects over the past decade - from transforming iconic restaurants like La Gare and Lapérouse into exotic, mythical spaces, to her most recent masterful interpretation of Parisian luxury with her top-to-bottom redesign of the city’s coolest boutique hotel, The St. James.

La DoubleJ:

You have roots in Italy, Spain and France - do you think each culture has influenced in you in a different way?

Laura Gonzalez:

The mixture of cultures brings a richness of creation. I’m certain that this mixture is reflected in my daily work, in the use of colours, references and atmospheres that I can create.

LDJ:

You’ve founded Pravda Arkitect, re-imagined iconic spaces like the Bus Palladium, the Cartier boutique, and countless luxury restaurants and now you have your own in-house design collection. How do you find time for yourself to maintain your endless creativity?!

LG:

For me creativity comes from curiosity and research. For each project, we immerse ourselves in its context, in its culture, in its architecture, in its street, its city, its country and that always leads us somewhere. This is also what allows me to always renew myself and above all not to get bored :)

LDJ:

You opened the gallery in April of this year (2022), what made you want to create your own physical store and space?

LG:

We started our furniture collection in 2018, initially one piece at a time but we are prolific people and the collection has been growing at a crazy pace. So naturally we felt it was important to have a space to show our collection. But we didn't want a gallery without a soul. The idea is to create a scenography once a year that allows us to show our furniture in a different universe each time. We have already done two: one on spring and one on the Orient.

LDJ:

What is your favorite part of the design process - the research stage when finding your inspiration, connecting with the artisans you work with, or seeing the pieces come to life?

LG:

All three, undeniably. Creation without realisation can be frustrating.

LDJ:

You love to mix influences, genres, and textiles into your interiors and designs. What eras or aesthetics inspire you the most?

LG:

I am inspired by everything but I have a classic base that I mastered in and that allows me to rethink it constantly: I play with the 19th century as well as with art deco and sometimes with touches of the 70s.

LDJ:

Your current collection, THE REVELATION CAME TO ME FROM THE EAST, was inspired by your visits as child to your grandparents home. Does memory often play a big part in your design process?

LG:

For me, memory is part of the past, but it is also part of a dream and creativity, it allows us to rethink it, to reinvent it, because it is not always clear.

LDJ:

Like J.J., you love a great print. What about La DoubleJ’s maximalist clothes and homeware appeals to you?

LG:

I've been following La DoubleJ since its inception and I immediately loved JJ's vision of colour and pattern. Most of all I love the fact that it's timeless. Pieces that I bought 7 years ago, I still wear every season with pleasure. That’s a rare privilege in the fashion world.

LDJ:

You were generous enough to open up your gorgeous space for a beautiful party when we visited this month. (omg, that was the MOST fun night!) Is hosting gatherings something you particularly enjoy?

LG:

I love to entertain, I do it a lot at home. But then that evening at the gallery with all those beautiful people dressed in J.J.’s dresses was something MAGICAL.

LDJ:

What’s next for you?

LG:

A new agency where I can finally get my team together. The launch is scheduled for January 15, we can't wait.
